Friday Finds ☆ Taman Safari Indonesia In Bogor

March 24, 2011

Who said there are not many places to visit in Jakarta? Technically Taman Safari Indonesia is not in Jakarta, but it’s close from Jakarta for tourists to go visit. It is about 1.5 hour drive from South Jakarta. (Since my driver got lost, it took us something like 3.5 hours. Have I told you that my driver has the worst sense of directions…?)

It is the best zoo I’ve ever visited in terms of the interaction you get with animals. I’ve been to a Safari in Windhoek, Namibia and in Dakar, Senegal, the zoo in Singapore, in San Diego, California, Washington, D.C. and in Tokyo. The zoo in Tokyo is a bit sad as it is a typical zoo in a big city. I must say that the Taman Safari Indonesia is a MUST visit when you visit Jakarta.

This is a type of safari where you drive through your car or get on a bus.

There are many stalls like this where you can buy food for animals before you get to the Taman Safari, Safari Park.

We got 4 bunches of carrots for Rp. 20,000 at the beginning. I bet they are cheaper towards the end. There were at least 10 of them right next to each other on the same road!

How much to get?
Four bunches were not enough for us. Next time, I would buy between 8 and 12. You can also get bananas.

Be Aware
Feeding animals will make your car dirty as animals drop carrots in your car some times.

This hippo looked as if he was smiling.I was a bit afraid of monkeys as I have heard about aggressive monkeys at a monkey park in Indonesia. So, I pulled up our windows a bit higher when we were passing by the monkey section.

Now you go through a big gate…
You go through several times the areas where you drive through shallow water. I was nervous especially with this one, but it was exciting to see hippo right by our car.

There are cars like this parked throughout the Safari Park.

There was so much more to see, but after we were done with the safari part, we decided to head home. I was concerned about the traffic with the rain. Needless to say we had a great time!

When To Go?
Weekday is better. I waited until my daughter’s spring break, so that I could take my girls and my daughter’s best friend to Taman Safari on a weekday when the Indonesian schools are still on. My husband was at work.

Make sure you leave early in the morning to avoid the traffic. The traffic after you get out of the toll road in Cisarua seems always congested as there is only one road with one lane each way which leads to the zoo from the toll road.

I do not recommend going to the park on Friday or weekend. The toll road could be a nightmare. This is what I saw on the other side of the highway. Cars were not moving just like in a parking lot and this continued for miles.

Hi Kaho, I enjoyed your pictures! I haven’t posted my pics which I too when I went with TD and in-laws last Sept. (Guilty!) Btw next time you should try getting pics with the animals – I especially loved taking a picture while hugging the Orangutan! My friends highly recommend the shows as well. We only got to watch the tiger show and it was pretty entertaining!

Great pics (as usual!). You went there too! We went there on the weekends but there wasn’t so much traffic so the luck factor plays a little role too.It was a great safari park, isn’t it! I’m usually quite sceptic about Jakarta’s sightseeing spot, but this one is genius! My hubby laughs a lot about how skinny the bears are though! You deff.should see the rides, animals shows and circus shows next time!

Did you go there on Sunday or Saturday? Since you said you went on a weekend, I was wondering if Sunday could be a safe day to go out there as many drivers have a day off on Sunday. Or do you think it was a complete luck? I would love to go back there with my husband which means we’ll have to go there on a holiday or weekend, but since many people talk about bad traffic to go out there, I would not dare getting on the highway on Friday or Saturday when many people are expected to be out. It’s so hard to tell…

I went on Sunday, coz my hubby works on Saturday too. Sunday’s are deff. better compare to Fridays or Saturdays. And depart early (9 am at the latest). But you know how Jakarta traffic is though, so I can only wish you good luck! Have fun!!

Great post Kaho, just to let you know that I got 4 bunch of carrots for Rp10,000 during my last trip a few months back. My local friends told me the price, else I would have paid more too for sure ;).

Thanks!! That sounds more like the real price!

Great photos; great post. Did you go to the Singapore Zoo when you lived here?

I did go to Singapore Zoo when I lived there. I’ve been to the Night Safari as well. I think they are really well designed. The experience you get at the Safari Park in Indonesia is different and superb in a sense that you really interact with the animals.

I haven’t been to the Night Safari yet. Looking forward to doing it soon.

Hi, I plan to go to the Taman Safari on June. Do you know how long to drive there from Bandung? Do you have any recommended driver? Do I need to stay 1 night there or 1 day trip from Bandung and go back to Bandung at the same day?

    • May 1, 2011 7:37 am

Hi, Teresa! I don’t know how long the drive would be from Bandung, but I looked up on Google Map and it says 2 hours 3 minutes. When I looked up the directions on google map from South Jakarta to Taman Safari, it said 1 hour and 5 minutes, but it always took us easily over 2 hours. Sometimes close to 3 hours. My point here is that it can vary depending on the time of the day and the day of a week. I see that you will be driving on a small road a lot and this road could be very congested. You might be able to do a day trip, but it will be a very long day for you. I read somewhere that some people stay near Taman Safari over night, so that might be fun. Unfortunately I don’t know any driver from Bandung. I hope you can find someone good who can take you to Taman Safari!
