Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus

July 27, 2011

Have you been to a circus? I hadn’t until this trip to Texas. My husband’s step-dad and mom took us to Ringling Bros. Circus, which happened to be in town, while we were in San Antonio. As we approached the venue, Alamodome in San Antonio, I saw people from the animal rights group protesting. It made me feel guilty going, but after seeing the show, I realized that the parts that animals took part in was smaller than I thought and more than half of the show was about people. I took photos with my newly purchased Canon EOS Rebel T3. I only have the lens that came with the camera which is more for portrait, so I could not take any close up as I don’t have a telephoto lens. Maybe one day I will purchase it. I have to save money for it.

Both kids and adults had a great time at the circus. My husband I were wondering what the life is like to be in a circus touring from city to city on a weekly basis. That is a completely different world from mine.

The circus is steeped in American tradition. If you like to read, you should pick up “Water For Elephants” by Sara Gruen. It’s a great love story that takes place in the 1920’s in a circus. it was recently made into a movie starring Reece Witherspoon.

Your photos really capture the thrills and excitement!
Did you buy your girls a multi-colored flashlight souvenir?

Aww, I didn’t buy any goodies for the girls… ;P I’m sure they would’ve loved the flashlights!! “Water For Elephants” sounds like an interesting book! Maybe I’ll try to find the DVD here. Thanks for the compliment!!

Kaho, there are indeed many problems with treatment of circus animals, no matter how big or small their part in the act. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up the circus altogether. There are several animal-free circuses that have amazing acts with humans, and you can rest assured that your money isn’t supporting cruel treatment of animals.

Wow, I didn’t know. The animal rights group made me aware of the issue that I wasn’t aware of. I didn’t even think about that until now since I have never been to a real circus. I think human circuses are fantastic. We actually enjoyed the human performances more anyways. Thanks for the comment!
