Friday Finds ☆ Glory Frame, Jalan Benda Raya

September 27, 2012

If you live in Jakarta, you probably know that you live in a land of framing. It is cheaper than any places I know to get anything framed on a budget. You can probably go anywhere and you find the prices right. There are so many different places you can go to have your photos, paintings, art piece framed that it’s hard to pick where to go. I have been to a frame shop in Dharmawangsa City Walk Shopping Mall called FRAME STATION and I was happy with the end results. The prices were more on the high-end for the Jakarta standard, but compared to the those in the States, it was a great deal.

When I went on a little excursion to check out Bagel Bagel the other day, I spotted a frame shop, Glory Frame, on Jalan Benda Raya. I walked in and thought that it might be a good place to bring in valuable art pieces to be framed as the owner, Simon, is a photographer and artist himself and frames his own photography and paintings. I asked for a quote for framing the Japanese wood block paintings we have and the prices I got was very reasonable.

I brought 8 Japanese woodblock paintings by Nishijima, the artist my husband and I like. They were completed timely and I am pleased with the end result. The off-white matting on the paintings looks a bit too white to me. At the same time, I am afraid of choosing matting with a color because I’m worried that the color would limited the range of color of a wall where I can hang them. I’ll have to think about the matting a bit more.

There is an art gallery in the back and the owner, Simon, took me there to show me the gallery. It was really neat. I have seen his work at different bazaars in Jakarta and it was cool to actually be at the actual gallery.

Yeah, me too! I was about to ask you about a good place to get stuff framed! Yay! How long did it take for them to get the stuff ready? By the way, I LOOVEEE the Japanese prints! THey look great!

Good! I wish I know more places closer to you. I was told a week, but the frames were ready earlier than a week. I dropped off prints on Monday and they were ready to be picked up on Saturday. We bought Nishijima online from Japanese Closet. I’ve always had good experiences.

I used to follow your blog in the beginning of this year when we re-located from Japan to Jakarta, and I was busy decorating our new home. Thanks for a lot of good tips for interior shops and lunch restaurants. Today I stumbled over your domain again… and how funny… I recognized I also have a Nishijima print on one of my walls -bought in a small craft shop in Kobe years ago!
I didn´t know anything about the print – the style and motif just reminds me of one of my favorite Kyoto artists, woodblock print maker Clifton Karhu (now deceased) . Have a good day!

Carmela, nice to hear from you again!! I remember receiving emails from you. Thank you. I love Nishijima. I love the beautiful wood block prints and they are a reminder of my home, Japan, for me. I hope you’ve settle in Jakarta well. I would love to see in photos your new home after you decorated it!! I’ll check out Clifton Karhu.

Lovely Thoughts
