Living Room ☆ Before & After & New Swing Rattan Chair
My living room is not complete yet as I am still waiting for one more item to arrive for me to use for decoration in the living room. (To view the completed living room, click here.) Other than the last one item, our living room project is almost complete. I have been working on my home decorating project for weeks. It’s always a slow process when we move to a new country. Knowing that, I have purchased pretty much everything to create our pad in Mumbai our home except for one item: Swing Rattan Chair! I purchased a swing rattan chair in Mumbai.
I am very excited to own a swing rattan chair since ever since I laid my eye on one in Jakarta in my friend’s daughter’s room, I have dreamed about owning one. You can see the swing rattan chair that I saw in the adorable girl’s room at my friend’s in my post, Black and Yellow Girl’s Room.
I’m actually a very reserved person when it comes to trying a new place to shop in a new city. It is a daunting task for me to research, find the time and go out to buy items to decorate my home on my own and even if my friends tell me about a good place to shop, making it a priority to visit is a whole another story for me. Another thing is that I’m a type of person who needs a step by step guidance in order for me to be motivated to try a new place. I find that a lot of information in Mumbai is word of mouth and often times I hear people say that such and such can be found in this and that area. That doesn’t do for me. That’s why I try to design this blog for many people to be motivated to try places that I have tried and would like to recommend.
When my neighbor, John, said that he was going for a rattan chair shopping for his daughter and asked if I was interested, even though I wasn’t looking into buying any furniture, I grabbed the opportunity to go out and see a furniture store. By the way, John and his wife, Tania, are one of the most outgoing and resourceful people I have known and my husband and I are lucky to have them as our friends. They appear to me “expat life experts”. They arrived in Mumbai about the same time as we did, but the amount of information they know makes me feel as though they have been in Mumbai for a year already because they have gone out and discovered so many places from the Day 1.
We arrived in a tiny furniture shop, Kotwala on S.V. Road in Mumbai. I had my son with me.
It’s a type of store where you show photos of items you want to order made. While I entertained my son as seen in the photos above, I was able to take a look at a photo of a chair that John was shopping for and found out that he was buying a swing rattan chair. I couldn’t help but jump on the order as I have always wanted to own one! I wasn’t prepared to make a big impulse purchase, but I said to the store keeper that I would like to order one as well. It was 10,500 Rupees (About US$170) and I usually don’t spend this much amount of money like that, but I thought I probably will not come back if I decide that I want it later, so I might as well order then. So, I did.
I am very glad that I made that decision to buy it. I love the swing rattan chair! I will put the information about the store at the end of this post.
Now here are the before and after photos of my living room.
Here is the list of things I did to change and made a room with our own personality.
1. Painted the wall into gray
2. Switched a carpet with our own. The carpet that was already in the living room is now in the foyer.
3. Switched all the lamps with my own lamps. We always move with our own lamps because you can use lamps anywhere in the world as long as you use an adapter and voltage appropriate light bulbs.
4. Removed chairs and added a sofa. The chairs are also in the foyer.
5. We added a few pieced of our own furniture (we live in a furnished apartment) such as entertainment center, coffee table and side table which I bought at KOI Kemang Gallery in Jakarta, Indonesia.
6. Wall hangings on the wall.
Minor changes can make a space look very different. I plan on making a slip cover for one of the chairs in the living room, but I am yet to try. We’ll see how long it’ll take me for an action.
I will post more photos of my living room once I make one more changes. I hope you find my decorating ideas helpful or interesting.
Below is the information about the shop our friend and I purchased a swing rattan chair. I did not shop around as I copied my friend, so I cannot guarantee that this shop offers the best skill or price in Mumbai, but I can tell you that I am happy with the end product. It took them a little over 2 weeks from the day I ordered until the day I received it.
